Quest for Hope

Welcome, dear readers, to the thrilling saga of 2023: the year that promised to solve climate change but somehow ended up having more mood swings than a toddler with too much sugar.

So, what did 2023 do to tackle climate change? Well, it put on a show! It dazzled us with its promises of cleaner air and greener pastures.

Take, for instance, the heartening news that emerged amidst the chaos. Reports revealed that a staggering 2.3 million people about 30% since 1990 have decreased in number of deaths from indoor air pollution, which is result in use of clean cooking fuel. This significant shift represents a monumental step towards reducing indoor air pollution and its detrimental health impacts, showcasing that change is indeed possible on a global scale.

Another ray of hope shines through the exponential rise in renewable energy adoption. Across the globe, countries are investing in wind, solar, and other sustainable energy sources, marking a significant shift away from fossil fuels. This transition is a testament to the collective effort towards a more sustainable energy landscape.

One more is the reduction rate of deforestation in the Amazon rain-forest, a vital ecological treasure for the planet. Brazil deforestation falls after reaching 15-year high, dropped by 50 percent.

Only 17 in 100,000 people have new HIV infections

WHO approved and cost- affordable and new malaria vaccine.

But guess what? The only thing greener was the envy of anyone who wished for real change.

Let’s talk air pollution, shall we?, the domain that I work in. Oh, 2023 really took air pollution by the hand and said, “Let’s dance!” It personified smog into an obnoxious roommate who just wouldn’t leave, no matter how many hints you drop. It presented us with a parade of pitiful policies that promised to purify polluted pockets. But alas, they performed about as well as a fish riding a bicycle — lots of effort, a few result(s).

The year played the part of a stand-up comedian, cracking jokes about renewable energy targets while secretly cuddling up to fossil fuels like they were its childhood teddy bears. It personified wind turbines, whispering sweet nothings into their blades but then cozying up to coal plants behind their backs.

You see, 2023 was like a magician, waving its wand and making promises disappear faster than you can say “carbon footprint.” or “ESG.” It promised to kick air pollution to the curb, but it might have ended up giving it a VIP pass to hang around like a stubborn guest at a party.

Ah, the charm of Delhi and Mumbai, India’s poster children for the “most livable city (except for air and water pollution)” award! These bustling metropolises are like that high-maintenance celebrity friend — glamorous on the outside, but oh-so-problematic once you scratch beneath the surface. Delhi and Mumbai are like rival siblings competing for the title of “Who Can Choke Their Residents Quicker?” Construction dust in Delhi dances through the air like confetti at a never-ending party, while Mumbai and Bengaluru’s potholes rival moon craters in both number and size. These cities have turned dodging dust and potholes into an extreme sport!

And not to forget our dear industries. They’re the divas of pollution, emitting toxic gases like they’re auditioning for a sci-fi movie about Earth’s downfall. They’re the drama queens of the pollution game, making sure everyone notices their presence by filling the air with more toxic fumes than an overworked chimney. It’s like Delhi and Mumbai have a complicated relationship with pollution — they complain about it non-stop, but when it comes to taking action, it’s as if they’ve lost the memo.

Now, onto the tier 2 heartthrobs like Jaipur, where the allure of the Pink City is tinged with dust storms that sweep through like unwelcome guests at a royal banquet. Chennai, on the other hand, brings its own melody to the pollution symphony. While it’s not one to flaunt potholes like Mumbai, it’s no stranger to the air pollution tango, especially with industries adding their toxic notes to the mix.

So, while these cities boast a vibrant culture, mouth-watering street food, and a never-ending buzz, they also offer a side dish of pollution that’s as unavoidable as a Bollywood dance number in a movie.

Here’s to envisioning a future where these cities trade their pollution for fresh air, smoother roads, and skies as clear as their residents’ dreams. Cities may grapple with their environmental challenges, but within their chaotic rhythms lie seeds of change, waiting to bloom into a brighter future.

In the heart of bustling streets,

Where the smog and dust compete,

Hope whispers in the gentle breeze,

Promising a world with clearer ease.

As we bid adieu to the challenges of today, let’s embrace tomorrow with open arms. Let’s nurture hope, sow seeds of compassion, and work towards a future where cities thrive in harmony with nature, where skies are clearer, and where the air is a testament to progress without compromise. Here’s to the resilience of these cities and the people within them, for every step taken toward a cleaner, kinder future is a step towards transforming these bustling hubs into havens of sustainability and joy.

May hope light our paths, and compassion guide our actions. Cheers to a future where every city shines, not just with its vibrant culture, but with the radiance of a cleaner, greener world!
